PELVIC PAIN & PELVIC FLOOR DYSFUNCTION

Millions of Americans suffer from pelvic pain and/or pelvic floor dysfunction.   And it’s not just women.  Men and children also suffer from pelvic pain.  The reasons for this condition are very complicated and many systems of the body are involved: musculoskeletal, uro-genital, digestive and psycho-emotional.  Often the condition may be due to an infection, childbirth, menopause, trauma or surgery.  I am involved in a consortium of excellent, complementary practitioners in NYC who are at the forefront of this area of medicine.  Along with gynecologists, physiatrists, physical therapists, naturopaths, psychotherapists, nutritionists and mind-body practitioners, we are offering compassionate, comprehensive care for pelvic pain.

Acupuncture for Pelvic Pain & Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Acupuncture can reduce the intensity of the pain

In the same way that it helps calm over-used, shortened and tight muscles in the low back or shoulder, acupuncture relieves pelvic muscle pain.  Similarly, weak and inactive muscles can be activated with gentle acupuncture stimulation. These needling techniques create direct communication between the pelvic floor muscles and the central nervous system, allowing for the readjustment of muscles and the reduction of pain signals.

Acupuncture dials down the central nervous system (CNS) and balances the autonomic nervous system (ANS)

Recent research suggests that acupuncture balances the nervous system through the release of oxytocin and neurotransmitters such as endorphins, norepinephrine and enkephalin.  When the body receives these “feel good” and pain-relieving substances, a true feeling of calm permeates the “bodymind”. Regular weekly acupuncture can help shift the body into this “calm and connect” mode (as opposed to “flight or fight” mode), enhancing the quality of our lives on many levels.

Acupuncture balances all the systems of the body and improves their functionality

It’s not just musculoskeletal issues that are improved by acupuncture.  Digestion and elimination, urinary and bowel function, immune and metabolic function, and even the quality of skin tissue, are all improved by acupuncture as well.
